Have you ever wondered how you can be peaceful when you’re upset, anxious, fearful or stressed?  Sometimes it’s hard to even imagine being peaceful with all we have to do at work and all that we want to do at home.

Something happened at the movie theater the other day that reminded me of just how easily self hypnosis is used to be peaceful in any circumstance.

It was a busy day for me. I had many projects I was working on and several phone calls I wanted to make. However, I had promised my wife that I would go to the movies with her in the afternoon. I didn’t want to go, but a promise is a promise.

We arrived about 15 minutes early and sat in the theatre watching ads for local products and services. One ad was for a real estate agency. Another was for a gardening center. I was only partly aware of the ads as they flashed by on the screen. Mostly, I was rearranging my to do list in my head and considering what I’d be able to accomplish in the time that would be left after the movie.

An ad appeared for a massage retreat center. It was just a slide without sound or animation. The ad simply said, “Be still. Refresh. Renew. Relax.” The slide was on the screen for only about 15 seconds, but I noticed I was feeling slightly more relaxed. After about two minutes, the slide came up again. I relaxed even more.

Two more minutes passed, the slide appeared again and I went deeper and deeper into relaxation. Self hypnosis is nothing more than what I was experiencing: the repetition of a suggestion while going deeper and deeper into a relaxed state. I was literally self hypnotizing myself to relax.

There was still about 7 minutes before the movie started and I used that time to repeat the words “Refresh. Renew. Relax” over and over again. With each repetition, I was becoming more peaceful. My concern about the projects and phone calls disappeared. I felt relaxed and I enjoyed the movie.

When I returned home, I completed what I could before the business day ended without pressure or stress. I was at peace.

You can use this same technique to induce peace for yourself by simply repeating the word “peace” over and over again. To remind yourself to do this, write the word peace on several note cards and place them on your desk at work, on the refrigerator at home, on the bathroom mirror, etc. Whenever you see the word peace, inhale and, as you exhale, repeat the word peace. Be peaceful by finding peace everywhere you look. With time and repeated repetitions, you will not only find peace, you will be peaceful.

And that’s the secret to using self hypnosis to be peaceful.
